Hair loss myths versus facts

Hair loss attracts more folklore than almost any other everyday health topic. Hats, helmets, shampoo, your mother's father, cold showers: everyone has heard a confident explanation that turns out to be half true at best.

The myths would be harmless if they did not change behaviour, but they do. People blame the wrong causes, spend money on fixes that cannot work, and wait years before starting something that can.

False. Hair loss is common in women too; it just looks different.

Male pattern loss is hard to miss because it reshapes the hairline. Female thinning is usually diffuse: a widening parting, a thinner ponytail, less volume overall, often triggered or accelerated by hormonal shifts after pregnancy or around menopause. Pattern hair loss happens at follicle level, driven by genes and hormones, and a normal hat does not restrict the blood supply to your scalp. The only headwear-adjacent risk is constant, forceful pulling on the roots, which is a hairstyle problem (think tight braids and extensions) rather than a hat problem.

Myth: hair loss means something is wrong with your health

Mostly false. The most common form, androgenetic alopecia, is hereditary and says nothing about your general health.

There is a sensible caveat: sudden, diffuse shedding can follow illness, fever, crash dieting, thyroid problems or nutrient deficiencies. Myth: stress does not affect hair

After a major stressor such as illness, surgery or an intensely difficult period, a large share of hairs can switch to the resting phase and fall out two to three months later. This type of shedding usually recovers on its own once the trigger passes, though chronic stress can drag it out. Myth: washing your hair often makes it fall out

False. Washing releases hairs that had already stopped growing.

The hairs you see in the drain were in the shedding phase and on their way out regardless. Skip a few washes and they simply accumulate, then come out together and look alarming. A clean scalp is a better environment for hair than an oily one; just be gentle with very hot water and rough towelling, which can snap fragile lengths.

Myth: natural oils can cure baldness

False for pattern loss. Oils condition the hair and scalp, but they do not act on the hormonal mechanism that shrinks follicles.

Rosemary, castor and coconut oil all have their fans, and as scalp and hair care they are perfectly reasonable: less breakage, less dryness, a nicer feel. But conditioning is not regrowth. Pattern loss is gradual miniaturisation: follicles shrink and produce ever finer hair before they stop entirely. No. That is a popular refinement of the myth, but the tendency is polygenic: genes from both parents play a role. Looking at your mother's father tells you something, just far less than the myth promises. Family history on either side raises the odds.

Can a helmet or tight cap thin my hair?

Normal wear cannot. Only constant, forceful traction on the roots, day after day, can damage follicles, which is why very tight hairstyles are a real risk and hats are not. If a helmet rubs, you might see some breakage at the friction point, but the follicles underneath stay intact.
