If you use minoxidil, read this before you buy

Do not apply minoxidil to a freshly rolled scalp. Microneedling temporarily opens the skin, which increases how much of any topical product is absorbed into your bloodstream rather than staying where you put it. Leave around 24 hours between rolling and your next minoxidil application, and skip a session rather than doubling up.

Keep it to yourself

A dermaroller is a personal item, in the same category as a razor. Do not share it with anyone, disinfect it before and after every session, and replace the head when the needles dull or bend. A blunt roller drags at the skin instead of penetrating cleanly, which is how people end up with irritation.

Light pressure, clean equipment, and nothing applied to the scalp straight afterwards.

  1. Disinfect the roller head before use and let it dry.
  2. Start on a clean, dry scalp. Do not roll over broken, irritated, sunburnt or infected skin.
  3. Roll gently over the target area — a few passes horizontally, vertically and diagonally.
  4. Use light pressure. The needles do the work. Pressing hard does not improve anything and tears at the skin.
  5. Lift the roller between directions rather than dragging it across the scalp.
  6. Disinfect the roller thoroughly after use and return it to its case.

Do not apply minoxidil, or any other topical product, immediately after a session. Wait around 24 hours. Freshly needled skin absorbs far more than intact skin does.

Three rules worth keeping:

  • One person, one roller. Never share it.
  • Replace the head once the needles feel dull or look bent.
  • Start with one session a week and do not increase frequency because nothing seems to be happening.
