What to expect, and when

Weeks 2–8: some extra shedding is normal and expected. Resting hairs are being pushed out so new ones can grow. It settles.

Start with dry hair and a dry scalp.
Part your hair to expose the thinning area.
Dispense half a capful of foam onto your fingers. Cold fingers help, as the foam melts on contact with warm skin.
Work it directly into the scalp along the part, not onto the lengths of the hair.
Spread it across the whole area you are treating.
Wash your hands straight away.
Let it dry fully before styling or going to bed.

Half a capful once daily is the full dose whether the thinning area is small or large. Using more, or using it twice a day, does not produce faster results.

Two practical notes:

Applying at night suits most people — it has hours to absorb and nothing to interfere with.
Leave around four hours before washing your hair so the dose is not rinsed straight out.

Is 5% not the men's strength?

The 5% foam is the strength used for women in a once-daily routine, against twice daily for men. The total amount of minoxidil you apply over a day is what differs, not the concentration in the bottle.

How long until I see a difference?

First fine new hairs usually appear around months three to four, with a visibly narrower part between months four and six. Judge it at six months.

My hair is shedding more since I started. Should I stop?

Will it make my hair greasy or ruin styling?
