Regaine minoxidil lotion 2% for women, three months

A parting that keeps widening, or hair that has thinned diffusely across the top, is the usual pattern of female hair loss. Regaine 2% lotion is the long-established over-the-counter treatment for it: 3 × 60 ml, three months at 1 ml twice a day, applied with a measured dropper.

Minoxidil is clinically proven to regrow hair and to slow further loss, and it is the most studied over-the-counter hair loss treatment there is.

Why 2% is not a weaker option

The number on the bottle is only half the story. The 2% lotion is applied twice a day; the 5% foam is applied once. Both are approved women's treatments and both are proven — they simply arrive at the dose by different routes. The 2% lotion is the strength most women were originally started on, and the one many prefer to stay with.

What to expect, month by month

Weeks 2–8: some extra shedding is normal. Resting hairs are pushed out so new ones can grow, and it settles by itself.
Months 3–4: fine new hairs begin appearing along the parting.
Months 4–6: those hairs thicken and the parting starts to look narrower.
Ongoing: results hold while you keep using it. Stop, and hair returns to where it would have been within a few months.

If the lotion does not suit you

The most common complaint about any minoxidil lotion is a dry, itchy scalp, and the usual cause is propylene glycol. The 5% foam for women leaves it out and is applied once a day rather than twice.

This treatment is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Read the package leaflet before use.

One millilitre, twice a day, morning and evening.

Start with dry hair and a dry scalp. Minoxidil absorbs poorly on wet hair.
Part your hair to expose the thinning area.
Fill the dropper to the 1 ml mark.
Apply the lotion onto the scalp along the parting, not onto the lengths of your hair.
Spread it evenly with a fingertip.
Wash your hands straight away.
Let it dry fully, around two to four hours, before styling or going to bed.

Use 1 ml twice a day whether the thinning area is small or large. Going above 2 ml a day does not speed anything up.

Two things worth knowing:

Apply the evening dose well before bed. Wet minoxidil transfers onto pillowcases and from there onto faces.
Leave around four hours before washing your hair, and apply after colouring rather than before.

The lotion is flammable while wet — keep it away from open flame until dry. For external use only. Adult women. Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Read the package leaflet before use.

Active ingredient: Minoxidil 2% w/v

Other ingredients: Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Purified Water

Propylene glycol carries the minoxidil into the scalp, and is the usual cause of the dry or itchy scalp some women notice in the first weeks. The 5% foam for women does not contain it.

Formulations are occasionally updated by the manufacturer, so check the ingredient list on the packaging you receive.

Should I use the 2% lotion or the 5% foam?

Both are approved for women and both are proven. The 2% lotion is applied twice daily with a measured dropper; the 5% foam once daily and without propylene glycol. Choose on routine and scalp sensitivity rather than on the percentage.

Is 2% too weak to do anything?

No. It is the strength women's minoxidil was established on, applied twice a day. The percentage on the bottle is not comparable across products with different application frequencies.

How long until I see a difference?

First fine new hairs usually appear around months three to four, with a visibly narrower parting between months four and six. Judge it at six months.

My hair is shedding more since I started.

That is expected between weeks two and eight and it settles on its own. It reflects the hair cycle turning over rather than damage.

Can I use it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Minoxidil is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy.

Can I colour or style my hair as usual?

Yes, once the lotion has dried. Apply after colouring rather than before, and leave around four hours before washing so the dose is not rinsed away.
