Minoxidil holds the hair it regrows only while you keep applying it, so the honest number is the price of a year rather than the price of a box. Why a drugstore cannot sell it to you

German shoppers reach for a Drogerie first, because that is where almost every other hair and scalp product lives. Topical minoxidil is not there, and this is not a stocking decision that might change next season. Minoxidil for the scalp is classed as pharmacy-only in Germany, and a Drogerie is not a pharmacy, however freely it sells anti-dandruff shampoo and hair supplements. The Apotheke, and what it will hand you

Pharmacy-only does not mean prescription-only. Topical minoxidil is sold over the counter in German pharmacies without a doctor's involvement, in both the 5% strength usually used by men and the 2% often used by women. Minoxidil tablets are a different medicine, prescribed for blood pressure, and nothing on this page applies to them.

What the counter genuinely gives you is a pharmacist to ask, in German, on the day you start. If you take other medication, or have any history with your heart or your blood pressure, that two-minute conversation is worth more than any price comparison, and this summary of when hair loss needs a professional opinion is worth reading beforehand. What the counter is less likely to give you is choice or a low price. Expect one or two branded options, a month or two at a time, and a price that varies between pharmacies, because German pharmacies set their own on over-the-counter products.

Why the German shelf says Regaine

This is the detail that confuses anyone who has read American forums. The same minoxidil product is called Rogaine in the United States and Regaine across most of Europe, Germany included. German pharmacies stock the branded product because that is what a licensed medicine supply chain is built around: a marketing authorisation, a German-language leaflet and a distributor. Generic 5% minoxidil in twelve-bottle boxes is a retail proposition rather than a pharmacy one, which is why the counter almost never has it. That is the gap the online route fills: same drug, same 5% strength, same twice-daily dose described in the patient leaflet for the branded 5% scalp solution, sold in three, six and twelve month supplies.

Buying minoxidil as a woman in Germany

Female pattern hair loss does respond to topical minoxidil, and the same pharmacy rules apply: over the counter, no prescription, 2% and 5% products both available.

Get a diagnosis first, though.
