Minoxidil works on a schedule. Twice a day, every day, is the whole trick.

1. Start with dry hair and a dry scalp. Minoxidil spreads and absorbs poorly on wet hair.
2. Part your hair to expose the thinning area.
3. Fill the dropper to the 1 ml mark.
4. Apply the lotion directly onto the scalp — not onto the hair — across the whole area you are treating.
5. Spread it gently with a fingertip so it covers evenly.
6. Wash your hands straight away.
7. Let it dry fully, around two to four hours, before you go to bed or style your hair.

Use 1 ml twice a day, morning and evening, whether the thinning area is small or large. More than 2 ml a day does not speed anything up.

Two things that make it easier to stick to:

Propylene glycol is what carries the minoxidil into the scalp. It is also the most common cause of the dry, itchy scalp some men get in the first weeks. If that happens to you, the foam versions leave it out.

How long before I see results?

Most men see the first fine new hairs around months three to four, with visible density between months four and six. Judge it at six months, not before.

My hair is shedding more since I started. Is that normal?

Yes, and it is a good sign rather than a bad one. Minoxidil pushes resting hairs out so new ones can grow. It usually shows up between weeks two and eight and settles on its own.

What happens if I stop?

Minoxidil maintains your hair while you use it. Within a few months of stopping, your hair returns to where it would have been without treatment. It is a routine rather than a course.

Lotion or foam — which should I pick?

The lotion gets to the scalp through hair more easily and costs less per month. The foam dries faster, has no propylene glycol and suits sensitive scalps better. Both contain 5% minoxidil and work equally well.

Is it safe, and are there side effects?

Minoxidil is an approved over-the-counter treatment and is safe when used as directed. Some men get scalp dryness, itching or irritation, particularly early on. Unwanted facial hair can occur if the lotion transfers, which washing your hands prevents.
