Where to Buy Minoxidil in the Netherlands: Every Option Compared

Searching for minoxidil in the Netherlands usually starts at the drugstore, because that is where Dutch shoppers expect to find anything health-related. That is also where the search ends in disappointment. Neither Kruidvat nor Etos stocks minoxidil, in store or online.

So the practical question is not which drugstore to visit. It is whether to go through a pharmacy or order online, and what the difference actually costs you over a year of daily use.

Does Kruidvat sell minoxidil?

No. Kruidvat carries no minoxidil products, neither on the shelves in its physical stores nor through its online shop. The same goes for Etos.

This catches a lot of people out, because Kruidvat is the default first stop for almost every other hair and scalp product in the Netherlands. Anti-dandruff shampoo, yes. Supplements marketed for hair, yes. The actual medicine that treats hereditary hair loss, no.

That leaves two realistic routes in the Dutch market: a pharmacy, or an online retailer that ships within the EU. Do you need a prescription?

Not for the topical version. Minoxidil lotion and foam are sold to consumers in the Netherlands without a doctor's prescription, in both the 5% strength commonly used by men and the 2% often used by women.

Oral minoxidil is an entirely different medicine, prescribed for blood pressure and used off-label for hair loss under medical supervision. It does require a prescription, and nothing in this guide applies to it.

The pharmacy route

The apotheek is the right starting point if you want a professional opinion before you begin, particularly about interactions with other medication or about a scalp that is already irritated.

A pharmacist can flag anything worth raising with your huisarts first. That conversation is worth real money if you take blood pressure medication, since minoxidil was originally a blood pressure drug and the topical form is absorbed in small amounts. What a pharmacy will not usually give you is choice or a competitive price. Expect one or two options and a cost per millilitre near the top of the market.

Online shops, and what to check first

Online is where both the range and the low prices sit, especially on multi-month packs. It also asks you to judge the seller yourself, which a pharmacy does not. Four things worth checking:

• Stock dispatched from inside the EU. It arrives faster and carries no customs handling or unexpected import charges.

Read that table carefully, because it does not say what most product pages say. The twelve month pack at roughly EUR 0.21 per millilitre is the cheapest 5% minoxidil available to a Dutch buyer, undercutting the own-label products from other Dutch retailers, which run from about EUR 0.27 to EUR 0.43. The one and three month packs are not price-competitive at all.

Which route suits you

If you have questions about other medication or an existing scalp condition, start at the apotheek and buy your first pack there. You are paying for the conversation, and that is a reasonable thing to pay for.

If you already know minoxidil is what you want, buy a multi-month pack online.
