Regaine for Men in Europe: It's Sold as Rogaine Now

If you are searching for Regaine for men, the honest answer is that you will not find it on sale here. The men's Regaine line was withdrawn from our range, and the identical product now sells under its original name, Rogaine. It is one product family with two formats, and almost every question about it comes down to picking between them. The strength is not the variable: both are 5% minoxidil, which is the highest available without a prescription.

What the men's range contains

Two products, both at 5% minoxidil, both applied twice daily. On our shelves they carry the Rogaine name rather than the Regaine one, but the leaflets below describe the same formulations.

The Extra Strength Scalp Solution is a liquid applied with a dropper, 1ml per application. The patient information leaflet sets out the dosing.

The Extra Strength Scalp Foam is a mousse dispensed as half a capful and worked into the scalp with the fingertips. Its leaflet covers that method.

There is no 2% in the men's range and no once-daily men's regimen. Those belong to the women's products, which use different schedules for reasons our page on the men's 5% and women explains.

Choose the solution if you are treating a specific thinning crown where a dropper places the dose precisely, or if cost is the deciding factor.

Choose the foam if the solution has left your scalp itching or flaking, since propylene glycol is the usual cause, or if you apply in the morning and cannot wait hours for a scalp to dry. Regaine, Rogaine and the same product

Regaine is the European name and Rogaine is the North American one for the same brand. Same maker, same 5% minoxidil, different label for different markets. For men, only the Rogaine-labelled boxes are still available from us, so the choice of name has stopped being a choice at all.

If you have been following American content and want the box you recognise, the Rogaine 5% solution and Rogaine 5% foam ship from within the EU without import charges, though both are on pre-order rather than in stock, with delivery expected mid-September. If you want to start this week instead, Kirkland 5% lotion and Foligain 5% foam are both EUR 64.99 for three months and both on the shelf. The name on the carton is not a decision about the treatment. What you are really choosing between is a solution and a foam.

Both Rogaine lines are currently sold on pre-order, with delivery expected mid-September. The prices above are the standing ones, not a pre-order rate.

That figure matters more than it looks, because minoxidil is a long-term treatment and the monthly cost is one you keep paying. At EUR 26.66 a month, a year of the branded product is around EUR 320.

The cheaper routes to the same drug

The active ingredient is not proprietary. Several products carry 5% minoxidil at a lower price, and the difference is advertising budget rather than formulation.

Kirkland 5% lotion is EUR 21.66 a month at three months, dropping to EUR 12.50 at the twelve month pack. That is roughly a fifth cheaper at the same pack size and under half the branded cost at the largest. Our page on why Kirkland costs less explains where the difference comes from.

For foam, Foligain 5% foam for men is EUR 21.66 a month at three months, the same as a three month Kirkland lotion and about a fifth under the branded foam. Kirkland is not an option here: its men's foam was discontinued, as our page on the discontinued Kirkland foam sets out.

Who it suits

Regaine for men is licensed for androgenetic alopecia, and DermNet describes that pattern: gradual thinning at the temples and crown over years.

It suits you best if the loss is relatively recent, if there is still fine hair in the area rather than smooth scalp, and if you will apply something twice a day indefinitely. Follicles that have finished miniaturising do not restart, so earlier is better than later.

It is the wrong tool if the loss is sudden, patchy or circular, which points to alopecia areata, or if it followed illness, surgery or significant stress, which is usually a temporary shed. Hair loss alongside fatigue or weight change warrants a blood test rather than a product, and NHS guidance covers when to see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Is the foam better than the solution?

Not for growing hair. Both are 5% minoxidil. The foam is more comfortable for sensitive scalps and dries faster; the solution is cheaper and more precise.

Is there a stronger version for men?

No. 5% is the highest strength available without a prescription, and using more than the labelled dose raises side effects without improving results.

Is Rogaine the same as Regaine?

Yes, the same brand under different regional names. For men there is no longer a Regaine-labelled product in our range, so the Rogaine boxes are what you buy. The formulation and the 5% strength are unchanged.

Can I use the women's version?

The women's products use different strengths and frequencies. Follow the regimen on the pack you buy rather than mixing them.

Is a cheaper brand weaker?

No. A 5% solution contains 5% minoxidil whoever makes it. The price difference is marketing, not concentration.
